The Burnley game was ugly. Liverpool were not at their best, to say the least, and the fact that we came out with three points is more than anyone expected after the first half. Gini Wijnaldum, who scored the equaliser just before half-time, thinks the team stepped up in the second half, though, and that’s what made the difference.
"We were better in the second half and we got a bit lucky because in other games like this we lost but we showed fighting spirit today," Wijnaldum said. "It was important, and I think we did well in the second half.
"At this stage of the season it's better to collect points and it doesn't matter how, we just have to win games.”
Given the woes of the last few months, a messy victory feels just as good as a well-played and well-earned one. It’s an especially sweet victory given that Burnley is a team Liverpool have struggled with in the past, and the fact that they’re definitely not a top six team.
Getting over the bottom-of-the-league hurdle Liverpool’s been facing is a nice change. And if it helps Liverpool finish in the top four, Wijnaldum (and I suspect, quite a few others) will take an ugly win.
"It doesn't matter how we win at this stage of the season, as long as we get the three points.”
