Liverpool’s U23 side comfortably secured their spot in the Lancashire Senior Cup semi-finals after beating Bolton 3-1 on February 1. The Reds dominated the game for the most part, with Mike Garrity, the new U23 manager, starting a more experienced team that included Sheyi Ojo, Connor Randall, Harry Wilson, and Kevin Stewart. The three Liverpool goals came from Harry Wilson and Tom Brewitt, with Wilson converting two penalties.
Wilson’s performance was stellar throughout the game. He earned and converted a penalty in the first half, provided a sublime assist on the second in the form a free-kick, and secured Liverpool’s victory (and then some) with the final penalty. The Welshman has continued to impress both Jürgen Klopp and Liverpool fans since he made his first team debut against Plymouth Argyle in January.
"Harry Wilson is a wonderful young player,” Klopp noted in an interview prior to that match, an appearance that showed the Welshman's promise that was again on display against Bolton here. “That's how it is, in a few moments, I was impressed.”
Wilson has grown as a player since taking over the U23 captaincy this season, and has time and time again made his mark on the pitch. Liverpool Echo’s definitely been a bit infatuated with him, so I’m guessing he’ll be on his way to making more frequent appearances with the first team soon.
Apart from Wilson being everywhere at once, the night saw solid defending from Connor Randall, and convincing penalty-earning by Rhian Brewster (who continues to be astonishingly fast). Bolton’s only goal came from George Newell, but at that point, Liverpool were already assured of their spot in the semi-finals.
Here are all the goals from Wednesday night, just in case you need something positive to start your day with.
