Hoffenheim’s 20-year-old centre half Niklas Sule is one of his country’s brightest defensive prospects. In fact, he’s one of the top rated young defenders in all of Europe. He’s meant to be a budding superstar; he’s a player few think will remain at his current club for very much longer.
According to SportsBild, he could have already left, as the German sports outlet are claiming a slew of big clubs from across Europe made inquiries into the player this summer only for Sule to decide he needed the “familiar surroundings” of Hoffenheim to continue his development.
SportsBild, though, claim he turned down Liverpool. He turned down AC Milan and Napoli. He turned down Bayer Leverkusen and Wolfsburg and even Borussia Dortmund. Meanwhile, Karlheinz Forster, the player’s agent was adding another big name to the list by way of Chelsea.
“Yes, the interest was there,” said Sule’s representative when asked about a rumoured €30M bid over the summer. “They have made it clear that their interest will remain next season. I think to go to a big club, first you must be great player. Niklas could earn more, but we look for a career.”
Sule wasn’t a name heavily linked with Liverpool last summer, so it’s difficult to judge just how serious their interest was and whether it even went past the inquiry stage. Sule, though, seems certain to be a player in high demand next summer, when he will have two years left on his contract.
