The goals have been raining in around England to start the Premier League season. After the first 6 games, 9 of the 20 teams have scored at least double digits so far. Arsenal, Liverpool, and Manchester City have all been particularly prolific on the goal-scoring front, bagging 15, 16, and 18 goals respectively.
In this rather non-stereotypically English, free-scoring atmosphere, it would take a truly impressive performance from an attacking player to stand out in the minds of the fans. As it so happens, Sadio Mané, with his 3 goals and 1 assist in 5 games, has had a truly impressive start to the season. And in doing so, has earned the PFA Fans’ Player of the Month for August and September.
Mané not only outshone his equally impressive teammates like Philippe Countinho (3 goals, 2 assists) and Adam Lallana (3 goals, 3 assists), but also the likes of Sergio Aguero (5 goals), Diego Costa (5 goals, 1 assist), Alexis Sanchez (4 goals, 2 assists) and Kevin De Bruyne (2 goals, 4 assists). Or, rather, Mané at least outshone these players in the eyes of the fans.
It’s an impressive feat, especially considering the fact that Mané is brand new to the club. The Senegalese international showed his blistering pace and keen nose for goal from the off, scoring what might go down as the goal of the season for the fourth and winning goal for Liverpool on the opening weekend against Arsenal.
Congrats to Sadio on the fast start to his Liverpool career, and hopefully this is a good sign of more to come this season.
