If excellent hair was all that was required to start a football match, Emre Can would never miss a single minute of action. Unfortunately the football gods are jealous and petty to the point where they can’t appreciate quality hair care, and have taken it out on poor Emre with a series of minor knocks dating back to the tail end of last season.
However, Can is now back in full training with the squad and appears set to feature in the upcoming showdown with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Friday night. Apparently his progress is being closely monitored by the medical staff, and if he is able to train without any problems this week, he’ll be accompanying the squad down to London.
So far this season Can has only started one match—the 5-0 romp over Burton Albion in the League Cup—and played a mere 20 minutes in the league, a substitute appearance in the 4-3 win over Arsenal on opening day.
Can would certainly be a welcome addition if he can make the trip south. Liverpool have continually looked shaky at the back, and Can’s physical presence and willingness to commit “professional fouls” might be vital against Chelsea’s cynical brand of football.
Along with Can, Dejan Lovren and Loris Karius are also nearing full fitness, and might be in line for starts. Any of these three could be helpful in shutting down Chelsea, and escaping the Bridge with a result.
