Luis Alberto becomes the first of several likely Liverpool Deadline Day departures from Anfield after completing a medical with the Italian side Lazio. It was widely reported on Monday that the two clubs came to a £4.3 agreement, potentially rising to £6 million with add-ons.
Whether those add-ons are triggered or not, this will count as a loss for the Reds. Alberto transferred to Liverpool in the summer of 2013 from Sevilla for £6.8 million.
Unfortunately, the attacking midfielder never found his stride on Merseyside, only making 12 total appearances for the club, all of them in the 2013-14 season. He was subsequently farmed out on loan, first to Malaga in 2014-15, then to Deportivo de La Coruña last year.
Alberto clearly did not have a future at Liverpool, and hasn’t for several years now. Hopefully he’ll take advantage of his new digs in Italy. Best of luck, Luis. We’ll miss the “unleash the Alberto” meme.
