If it seems like only yesterday Liverpool were fully out of the running for Jonas Hector, that’s because it was. Yesterday, reports in Germany had the FC Köln left back signing a new deal while in England the consensus was Liverpool had never been seriously interested in the player and that if anything the club had been linked as a negotiating tactic.
A day on from that seemingly final instalment in the Jonas Hector transfer saga, and rumour has it the Reds are right back in for him. What’s changed? Well, the biggest thing seems to be that Jürgen Klopp has changed his tune and is now admitting he might just need defensive reinforcements. Beyond that, though, the picture rather looks the same.
If Hector was about to sign a new deal with FC Köln yesterday and was never actually a Liverpool target to begin with, the same would rather seem likely to apply to the story today. Dominic King at the Daily Mail, though, has floated Hector’s name once again, helping to kick off another round of linking the German international with an Anfield move.
Meanwhile, The Liverpool Echo claim Liverpool don’t think the left back is worth the £20M FC Köln have reportedly been asking for, a statement that works both to make it seem unlikely Hector will actually end up at Anfield while serving as confirmation of sorts that there is apparently at least some interest in seeing Hector actually end up at Anfield.
So. Having rumbled along in the background all summer, it seems as though nothing short of a completed transfer or the close of the window is going to stop the Jonas Hector to Liverpool rumours. Just another month of will he, won’t he to slog through, then.
