With Nathaniel Clyne one injury away from inducing mass heart attacks in Liverpool Country (TM), the Reds purportedly are interested in Udinese's starting right back, Silvan Widmer.
Widmer is only 23 and has achieved 7 caps for the Swiss national team, though he did not make Switzerland's squad for this summer's European Championships. He appeared 27 times (21 starts) over Udinese's 41 games, and despite 23 shots, scored 0 goals and notched 2 assists.
Napoli also reportedly are interested in the defender's services at this point, though prior reports suggested Milan were scouting the player.
While the young Swiss has his attributes, he would be one for the future and not make a lot of sense given Flanagan already is on the books. A left back would seem a more prudent purchase at the moment, particularly given Moreno's lack of tactical nous at (often very trying) times.
For those that go in for somewhat unreliable stats, Widmer is credited with creating a less-than-Downing 17 chances last season, a less-than-Adam 68% pass completion, and a-less-than-Moreno 1.5 tackles per 90.
So, hopefully we're not in for this kid, but if we are, hopefully he kicks on. Under contract until 2020, it's a little unclear where the rumor is coming from, but it's certainly not from the Liverpool backroom.
