Liverpool’s preseason schedule might have seemed full, but this morning the club announced a date with Klopp’s former club Mainz 05 on Sunday, August 7th at the German side’s Opel Arena. Kick off is set at 2:45 PM BST/9:45 AM EST.
The match takes place less than 24-hours after Liverpool’s London showdown with Barcelona at Wembley Stadium, and less than a week before Liverpool’s London showdown with Arsenal at The Emirates to kick off the Premier League campaign.
The Reds pulled off a similar trick last year, with preseason friendlies on consecutive days to HJK Helsinki and Swindon Town. It seems reasonable to assume that the two squads will be completely different, as was the case last year.
Klopp was roaming the sidelines for Mainz last time these two sides faced off in a preseason friendly in 2006, a game that Mainz would win by an impressive 5-0 scoreline.
“We last played Mainz 05 in a friendly in 2006 so it will be great to meet them again this summer,” Liverpool’s chief commercial officer Bill Hogan said, “Our fanbase in Germany has grown significantly and this will be a fantastic opportunity for our fans in Germany to see the Reds play a Bundesliga team.”
This game makes a great deal of sense from a global outreach perspective, especially with the ready-made Klopp connection. Also, it would not be a shock to see former Mainz goalkeeper Loris Karius get his first start for Liverpool in this match.
The one drawback to this preseason slate is the added risk of injury. Hopefully Klopp and the medical staff can manage player minutes to get the proper balance of “sufficiently warmed up for the season” and “not broken.”
