Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard will forever be regarded as a legend of the club, perhaps even its greatest ever player. However, the all-important league title alluded him, and his long and impressive career winds down, he looked back at some of the things he wishes he could have done differently.
Talking to the Telegraph, he explains:
“You look back at the highs and the lows. I always recognise that I achieved some incredible things. But I also reflect on some of the lows and wish that they were different, that I had achieved a little more. I don’t think I’ll ever be at peace. When it comes to football, I’m quite hungry, quite selfish. I want more than perhaps I can have. Maybe I’m a bit like a kid, a bit immature, when it comes down to that. I wish I was sitting here with an extra 10 medals. I’m just a kid, a fan from a council estate in Huyton who had a dream of playing for Liverpool once. So, I haven’t done too badly.”
I imagine that particular sentiment is common for professional athletes in their twilight, contemplating the trajectory of their careers, but it's a sentiment that all Liverpool fans would agree with. Gerrard's constant effort, heart, and loyalty deserve at least ten more trophies on their own.
And speaking of loyalty, the diehard Red admits to still following Liverpool's season closely, saying of the new Liverpool boss, "I text him quite a lot, but it’s more to wish him good luck than anything else. I’m a huge Liverpool fan, and I will be until the day I die. I’ll give my commitment to the Galaxy but I’ll never, ever forget about Liverpool."
Gerrard has one more season left with the LA Galaxy, and fans are eager to see what he will be doing with his post-playing life.
