We know that José Enrique will remain a Liverpool player until the end of the season before moving elsewhere on a free transfer. His former club had offered him a route to stay in the Premier League, but it appears that the hierarchy at Newcastle were only looking at Enrique as a short-term option. Perhaps such an offer isn't what Enrique is looking for after five years on Merseyside.
Jose Enrique to train with Liverpool this evening. Newcastle only willing to offer a short term deal.

Many journalists connected with the club reported that Enrique was seen in Liverpool's evening training session, ending any tiny possibility of a deal being revived closer to the transfer deadline at 11PM GMT/ 6PM EST. With a lucrative contract winding down, the fullback doesn't appear to have much desire to move unless the deal perfectly suits him.
Don't forget that West Bromwich Albion made a similar move for the free-kick specialist on the last day of the summer transfer window, agreeing a deal with Liverpool only for it to fall through. All that's left for the former Newcastle defender is to sit on the bench when squad players and youngsters are drafted in for cup games along with a few more months of training.
*It also appears that wages were an issue too, which shouldn't be a surprise to anyone ever.
