Having been tenuously linked to the Dynamo Kyiv winger earlier in the day, reports claim Liverpool are now involved in a late push for the Ukrainian with only hours to go in the transfer window. However, given those earlier suggestions Liverpool were after Yarmolenko were widely panned by journalists with ties to the club, fans might not want to get their hopes up.
Earlier, Italy’s Tuttomercatoweb claimed Liverpool were trying for the player and a £14.5M deal was possible. It looked like desperate rumour mongering, or perhaps as though Yarmolenko’s people were trying to drum up late interest in a player who in the past has often been linked with a Serie A move. Despite appearing a likely fabrication, they are now claiming that Liverpool remain hard at work chasing a deal.
If true, it would be a shock. Not only have Liverpool not been linked to Yarmolenko this summer—though they have been in the past—but under FSG, the club have shown little desire to engage in last-minute deals. One of the only times they tried was with Yarmolenko’s compatriot Yevhan Konoplyanka, and that ended in tears as the player’s oligarch owner foiled attempts by Liverpool to trigger his buyout.
Yarmolenko is a different case, at a different club, but with no suggestion Liverpool were interested in him at any point this summer and a collective head-scratching amongst respected English journalists when TMW first floated the story earlier today, it seems likely Liverpool fans can focus most of their energies on Jose Enrique’s odd little deadline day transfer saga as the window nears its close.
