The 2015/16 Europa League season proper kicks off with the group stage in just over three weeks, and Liverpool won't have to wait much longer to learn their fate regarding which opponents they'll face in continental competition this fall. The draw takes place at midday on Friday, the day after the final preliminary round of the tournament determines which twenty-two teams will join Liverpool and other direct qualifiers in the group stage.
Which clubs are in which pots has not been officially confirmed, as this is dependent on the results of the playoff round. Liverpool's poor showings on the continent over the last four seasons have affected their UEFA club coefficients, and positive results for Borussia Dortmund, Athletic Bilbao, Ajax, and even Rubin Kazan would be enough to leapfrog ahead of Liverpool in the rankings of teams still in the tournament.
But Liverpool are already ranked 13th according to UEFA's own website, which means that no matter what the results on Thursday, they'll be in Pot 2. Rules preventing teams from the same nation playing in the group stage means Liverpool can't be drawn against Tottenham Hotspur, but that still leaves Schalke 04, FC Basel, Napoli, Villareal, Sporting Portugal, and Olympique Marseille amongst their potential competitors, before taking into account the possibility of playing any one of the higher ranked teams battling it out in the playoff round.
Those who haven't blocked it out will remember that Liverpool twice failed to beat FC Basel during last year's Champions League campaign, and any one of the other teams in Pot 1 will present a challenge to a young and rebuilt team trying to establish a winning habit on the European stage. The draw takes place at 12:00pm GMT / 7:00am EST on Friday, August 28.
