Liverpool FC Transfer Rumours: Xabi Alonso Set for Reds Return (Again)

Another summer means another hopeful rumour about Xabi Alonso returning to Liverpool. It’s highly unlikely to actually happen, but it makes for a nice daydream.

The last few years, Xabi Alonso has reliably been linked with a return to Liverpool. Nobody has really taken any of the links seriously, but for some Reds fans it’s a fun daydream to indulge in, and for the English tabloids it’s an easy play on a sentimental fanbase.

Lest anyone think this summer might pass without those links surfacing again, fear not, The Metro have you covered. They claim that Liverpool are keeping a close eye on the situation at Bayern Munich, and with it looking as though Alonso may not be needed there next season, are considering offering him an escape.

The player himself has been honest when asked, saying he doesn’t know what the future holds, but it’s hard to really think that future involves returning to Liverpool as a player now that he’s 33 years old. Still, flanked by two of Jordan Henderson, James Milner, and Emre Can, it’s not impossible to think he could do a job.

Certainly he would fit the mould of a Pirlo-esque deep lying midfielder more naturally than Gerrard did, and he would bring positional responsibility to the role while allowing Brendan Rodgers to go on judging the success of any player in it by his offensive contributions. Despite that, it’s hard to see it actually happening.

It’s far more likely, if Alonso’s days at Bayern are nearing an end, it might be time for him to make his long promised return to Real Sociedad, where he always said he would end his career. For Reds fans looking to daydream a bit about him coming back, though, this appears to be your chance.
