Saturday Open Thread: Team Relegate Newcastle Edition

We're all waiting for Steven Gerrard's final Anfield appearance later today, but before that kicks off there's a few matches of note, including some important fixtures in the battle to avoid joining QPR and Burnley in the Championship next season.

With two teams already assured of the drop and the top four settled, the final two weeks of the Premier League season will be about watching to see who joins QPR and Burnley in the Championship. There's three or four realistic contenders depending on the outcomes today, with Hull City the current 18th-place occupant and each of Newcastle, Sunderland, Leicester City, and Aston Villa within four points. Sunderland and the Sebastian Coates bandwagon--which is once again gathering steam ahead of the summer after a very good performance in the win over Everton last weekend--have the advantage given that they have a game in hand, but that will come against Arsenal shortly in a fixture that few expect them to get much from. In the meantime they can try to send Leicester closer to the relegation zone today, while QPR can try to drag Newcastle into the depths of England's second tier with a win. Villa travel to Southampton and Hull visit Spurs in the other relevant matches for the relegation battle.

Norwich City and Ipswich Town are playing for the right to head in the opposite direction in the second leg of their promotion playoff, with the tie leveled at 1-1. A full day in France means chances for both Tiago Ilori and Divock Origi, with the former away to Lyon and the latter playing host with Lille against Marseille.
