The season is almost over, and Liverpool’s player of the season honours look set to be a race between budding superstar Philippe Coutinho and the resurgent Simon Mignolet while the steady Martin Skrtel lurks just out of frame behind them.
Before getting to picking Liverpool’s best of the season, though, there are still a few things to get through—like naming the club’s best player for April and surviving, both as fans and players, the final four games of a season that looks set to end in rather disappointing fashion.
The results in April may not make for pleasant reading, but Liverpool Offside readers clearly felt there were two players at least keeping things respectable for the Reds as they largely reverted back to their poor early-season form and let any top four and FA Cup dreams slip away.
And it’s no surprise whatsoever those two were Mignolet and Coutinho. The duo were finished every match this month in the top five, and between them took every man of the match honour in April—with Mignolet claiming four times and Coutinho two.
With five points for being named man of the match through to one for being ranked Liverpool’s fifth best, they dominated voting, with Mignolet taking 27 points and Coutinho netting 22. The maximum points available to any one player had he won every man of the match vote would have been 30.
Nobody else came close: Dejan Lovren’s newfound borderline competence got him eight points, while Martin Skrtel and Lucas Leiva managed five each. Mario Balotelli got four points for finishing second in voting following Liverpool’s loss to Aston Villa in the FA Cup.
