Gerrard XI 2: Gerrard (pen. x2)
Carragher XI 2: Balotelli, Drogba
A fine occasion on Sunday afternoon at Anfield, where a Steven Gerrard XI drew 2-2 with Jamie Carragher's squad, with Gerrard netting twice from the spot--the latter by virtue of a classic Luis Suarez dive--and Mario Balotelli and Didier Drogba scoring for the former vice-captain's side. It was a relatively emotional event, with the crowd spending most of the match serenading those who have moved on from Merseyside, and it appeared to be enjoyable for all involved both on and off the pitch.
Today was all about Gerrard, of course, but the captain was a peripheral figure in a match that was mostly about the return of Suarez and Fernando Torres, as well as Carragher, Luis Garcia, Craig Bellamy, Xabi Alonso, and Pepe Reina. Lucas was involved for most of the match as he works his way back up to full fitness, while there were some nice moments for Joao Teixeira, Jerome Sinclair, and Cameron Brannagan, each of whom should expect to be involved in the first-team setup in the coming years.
All in all, a nice break from the very grave events of the past week, and hopefully something that can provide a sentimental lift for Liverpool and its supporters ahead of the final month and a half of the season.
