Stop us if you've heard this one before, but Kevin Grosskreutz is a lifelong Liverpool fan who would jump at the chance to play for the Reds. That is a critical component of the transfer rumor that is being run with, but it's not the only component.
See, Kevin Grosskreutz' footballing career happens to have begun in earnest with Borussia Dortmund, where he spent time playing for one Jürgen Klopp. The two had many great successes together--Bundesliga titles, DFL Supercup titles, and the memorable UEFA Champions League run.
It also just so happens that Klopp is overseeing a Liverpool squad thin in a couple of position groups, wide attack and defense, where Grosskreutz is an accomplished player. He knows how Klopp works, and vice-versa, which shortens the adjustment period that Klopp has said is a primary impediment to successful January transfers.
Capable of playing on both flanks, and from defense to attack, Grosskreutz is the sort of utility player that will never turn many heads, will never command an eye watering fee, and will never chafe about being utilized in a plug-and-play role. It is a transfer rumor that lacks imagination, but it also happens to be one that ticks a lot of boxes for all parties concerned.
Fans would be forgiven for being desirous of another wide man plying his trade in Turkey this season, the on loan Lazar Markovic. But Kevin Grosskreutz could be an easy deal that cinches multiple squad needs in one swoop, and allows Liverpool the luxury of going for a heftier target as early as this January window. Time will tell, and caveats always abound, but you shouldn't hate this one, folks.
