After watching the just about every Liverpool match over the last couple of years I'd say that Klopp inherited a squad that needs some serious quality. I'm not advocating a complete overhaul because we went through that multiple times with Rodgers and it never works out. However, Liverpool need to add 2-3 really good players. If we are being honest, there are very few players on this squad that would start for a top-4 team. In fact, Everton probably have more top players in Lukaku, Stones and Barkley than Liverpool. So here's my take on the squad after seeing results under Klopp. Wondering what others think.
GK - There are better keepers than Mignolet and there are worse. I'm ok with him as the starter for now since there are areas of greater need. Not sure what to say about Bogdan - your backup keeper doesn't usually play a lot but it still seems like Liverpool can improve here.
FB - Clyne is solid but I expected more going forward. He doesn't appear to be much of a goal threat and doesn't have a great final ball. Moreno is pretty good going forward but a liability defensively and offers no physical presence at all. I'm probably ok with both as starters but Liverpool could upgrade at LB. If Flanno ever gets healthy he'll offer quality depth. Probably need at least one purchase for depth.
CB - Lovren looks improved under Klopp and he and Sakho offer pretty good quality at LCB. Gomez might be one for the future but ACL injuries can completely derail a career. I've always liked Skrtel but Liverpool must upgrade at this position and he seems the weak link. Would like to see Stones but won't happen. Not sure who is available but Liverpool must improve as this is an area of real need.
CM - Liverpool have lots of options but not near the quality required for a team that has designs on winning the league. This is also an area of need. Watching City/Arsenal highlights the need. For now I'd have Henderson as a starter. After that Can and perhaps Lucas are squad players (recognizing that Can may become a starter here in 2-3 years). I think Klopp has already decided that Allen doesn't fit and Milner won't play CM for him. I'd like to see Neves or Carvalho added but would be surprised if Liverpool add either in January. I've seen links to Gundogan.
AM - Coutinho is good and will only get better (though to be honest SIlva, Ozil, de Bruyne, Sterling, etc. are all better than anyone Liverpool has). The loss of Sterling looms large. Ibe has a lot of promise. Lallana is at best a squad player. I'm going to include Firmino in this position and he may come good but must improve a LOT.
ST - Sturridge if healthy is quality but he never is healthy. Ings and Origi both have promise. I doubt Benteke is the solution. Despite the money spent Liverpool need at least one player who will score goals -- Giroud, Walcott, Aguero, Martial, and Lukaku all would probably be an upgrade (though all may not be a fit). Villa, Swansea, Stoke, Sunderland, Newcastle and West Brom are the only teams to score fewer goals this season than Liverpool. This is a long way off from Fowler, Torres and Suarez.
