Liverpool 1, FC Sion 1: First Thoughts

Another good performance undone by shambolic defending and poor finishing.

Liverpool 1: Lallana 5'
FC Sion 1: Assifuah 18'

  • Pre-match Thoughts: If I were playing Clyne this much in FIFA, this is where he'd inevitably go down with a broken everything and be out the rest of the season. Football gods, please don't do that to us. Brendan, please rest Clyne (after the Derby).
  • Damn, Origi. Like a bull through a china shop, Origi somehow keeps possession through several defenders, cuts to the byline, and picks out Lallana for the opening goal. Lallana should have been flagged for offside in the build-up, but let's not talk about that.
  • All the good work is undone by sloppy defending. Clyne is showing signs of exhaustion early, Ibe and Gomez are out of position, and (because bad things come in threes) Mignolet should have done better. 1-1.
  • Despite his industry, Ings remains off the score sheet so far. First, gets a point-blank chance on an excellent through ball from Allen, but has his shot blocked by last-ditch defending. Then puts one in but is juuust offside. Then found himself in acres of space in front of goal, but just couldn't bring Lallana's cross under control.
  • Liverpool continue to look dangerous...in defense. This game doesn't look likely to end with only two goals.
  • Half-time Thoughts: Lallana had himself a hell of a half. Scored on a well-taken goal, and on a better day he'd have an assist or two as well. Just about every time Liverpool have been dangerous, Lallana has been directly involved. Liverpool were the better team, but again leaky defense negates all the good work done in the rest of the half.
  • Moreno on for Clyne. Clyne looked off the pace a bit, which is understandable given his recent workload.
  • Toure with his best Benteke impression, and knocks his bicycle kick off the crossbar. O ye football gods, why couldn't you give that to us?
  • Origi with a massive chance, 1-on-1 with the keeper after a beautiful through ball from Wee Joe. The shot is hit straight at the keeper and the sides remained deadlocked.
  • Liverpool were looking dangerous with two strikers. We've not looked dangerous with one stranded striker all season. Naturally, Rodgers takes off Ings for Coutinho. Bold move, Cotton, and so on.
  • Nice to see Coutinho has remembered how to use his sumptuous through ball, as Origi continues to look dangerous as a lone striker.
  • Full-time Thoughts: Loads of second half chances, but no end product. The performance wasn't altogether horrible, in fact, at times it was pretty good, with several good chances to find a winner. But. But it wasn't enough (again).
