Liverpool 20 21 Game Player Review
January 13th, time for the roughly-halfway player review. Since the last installment I've changed the calculations for the statistics ever so slightly . Before, a player's performance was evaluated for each game, and those individual evaluations were averaged to arrive at a result. Now, all relevant statistics (expected goals, actual goals) are summed and then averaged using the number of appearances as the denominator. The former method would skew the scores for players who normally didn't play the majority of games. The new method is far more fair and a better representation (in my opinion).
With that out of the way, here are the numbers, grouped by position.

Interestingly, Toure has the lowest score but the highest average points per appearance.

Is Enrique the best FB, or is this a small sample problem? Hmmm....

Coutinho In the Cellar
How can Lallana and Coutinho be at the bottom of this chart when they've been so good? The answer my friends is: selective memory. The sad truth is that they were not good for much of the first half of this season. In my opinion part of that is down to a run of bad form (Couts), getting match fitness and adjusting to a new team (Lallana). We can probably lay a little blame at the feet of the manager as well for not putting his players in the best position to succeed.
So, to make things better (in my mind), let's check out the numbers from the "Age of the 3 CBs" forward (games after 12/9):

That's better
One final note - you'll notice on the post 12/9 Midfielder table the "ga_net" column that everyone is a positive number (although Can and Lucas are basically 0). Positive numbers in that column are bad - it means you give up more goals than the average EPL team. As a team, before 12/9 our ga_net was negative. After the switch to 3 CBs it has shot up quite a bit:

ETW's take? We're playing with fire going for All The Goalz without a genuine goal scorer...
