So far this summer, most of Liverpool's fullback transfer rumours have involved left backs. Now, according to Spanish outlet AS the club are chasing Atletico Madrid right back Javier Manquillo. Previously, the player had been rumoured to be an Arsenal target, but with the Gunners signing Mathieu Debuchy, it has been suggested Manquillo is now resisting any Arsenal move.
The highly rated 20-year-old spent last season behind Juanfran at right back for Atletico and made only seven appearances across all competitions, meaning that he wouldn't be likely to start next season for either Liverpool or Arsenal. With Liverpool prepared to let Glen Johnson's contract wind down, though, getting a player like Manquillo in a year ahead of time isn't the craziest idea.
What doesn't make sense are suggestions in Spain that Atletico only want to loan Manquillo—whether it's to Liverpool or Arsenal. Spanish reports suggest the player has turned down loan moves to Getafe and Rayo Vallecano, both of which are moves that would have made sense for his development. Manquillo, though, is at least a year off starting for a top club.
If there's any truth to rumours of interest for him in England, it will not be in taking him on loan. At least not at Liverpool or Arsenal, where he wouldn't start regularly and the loan would serve less than zero purpose. Liverpool were previously rumoured to have had an £8M bid for Manquillo turned down in January.
