Champions League Open Thread: Forza Atleti Edition

New, comments

The Champions League semis kick off today with Chelsea traveling to the Spanish capital to face a daunting, dangerously complete Atletico Madrid side.

Thibaut Courtois has been cleared to play, Diego Costa is fit, and any Chelsea fans expecting an easy opponent could be in for a rude awakening. In fact, there's a case to be made that Atletico Madrid pose by far the toughest test for Chelsea, a physical, well drilled, counter-attacking side that will press all day, hit quickly, and remain solid at the back. As talented as Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, the other semi finalists, are, both have flaws for a manager like Jose Mourinho to try to exploit. Atleti, while not as talented, are La Liga title favourites for a reason and are most complete side remaining in the competition.

While that all adds up to a difficult task for Chelsea, it makes for the best possible pairing for Liverpool fans looking towards Sunday's league match against the London club, so join us as we keep an eye on the match while looking forward to Liverpool's return to the Champions League next season.
