Though Liverpool's injury situation remains the same for tomorrow's match against Fulham as it was last weekend against Arsenal, at least two players could be back in time for Sunday's FA Cup tie at the Emirates. Head of performance Glen Driscoll today confirmed that both Daniel Agger and Glen Johnson are back in training and could be involved on the weekend.
There was also good news to be had regarding Lucas Leiva, whose injury timeline has been given a welcome dose of specificity. If all goes well, the midfielder could be back in action by the end of February, while there are hopes that Jose Enrique and Mamadou Sakho are similarly nearing the end of their injury layoffs as the squad inches its way back to full fitness.
"Lucas Leiva was due to be in a brace for six weeks," said Driscoll, "but yesterday he was outside running just over three weeks in, which is fantastic and shows just how ahead of schedule he is. Jose Enrique also had a complex knee issue and following surgery is in the process of achieving his final strength gains before he can return to training."
Along with defining Lucas' injury situation using actual numbers of weeks, Driscoll also offered insight into why Sakho has been a continuing absence despite earlier suggestions he might returning to action before the end of January—the actual injury was slightly misdiagnosed. Like Lucas and Enrique, though, Sakho shouldn't be out much longer.
"Mamadou Sakho actually had a tear in his tendon and not the muscle of the hamstring as initially reported," was Driscoll's insight. "For a whole host of reasons tendons take longer to heal, but he is working hard and progressing. Without providing specific dates I would hope that by the end of the month we should start to get the likes of Jose, Lucas and Sakho back."
