Liverpool 2, Hull City 0: First Thoughts

A first-half header from Daniel Agger and brilliant free-kick from Luis Suarez are enough to see off Hull City at Anfield in a mostly drab encounter.

Liverpool 2: Agger 36', Suarez 50'
Hull 0

  • That opening twenty minutes or so was historically bad from both sides. Liverpool's passing was absurd, Glen Johnson hit a terrible shot and injured himself, Aly Cissokho fell over while walking, and Philippe Coutinho kicked the ball off his own face. Luis Suarez got the crap kicked out of him and had a goal ruled off for being inches offside. Other bad things happened too.
  • Speaking of Coutinho, he needs to stop shooting from outside the area. High, wide, left, wherever, it's just not on. Always.
  • Daniel Agger's header to take the lead probably should have been cleared off the line. Alex Bruce probably should have been sent off. Jordan Henderson probably should have finished Iago Aspas' lovely layoff. Coutinho probably should have finished Henderson's lovely pass over the top. And Craig Pawson should most definitely never referee anything ever again. Ever.
  • Luis Suarez is one of the best free-kick takers on the planet. Just an insane amount of ability on the ball the past two seasons.
  • Poor, poor invisible, fading, non-existent Martin Kelly. With Johnson hurt/bad, Brendan Rodgers opted for Kolo Toure rather than Kelly, and unless there's a start for him on the weekend, the future isn't looking so hot. Which is pretty sad considering the promise he's shown over the last few years.
  • The second half was pretty much pointless. Steven Gerrard came on. Victor Moses came on. Luis Alberto didn't. Phil made a fun run really late.
  • Three points! Welcome to 2014.
