Liverpool's Internationals Recap: Uruguay Stay Alive (For Now)

Uruguay hang on by the skin of their teeth to secure a much needed win that puts them slightly closer to qualification for Brazil.

Never far from controversy, Luis Suarez was the deciding factor in Uruguay's win against a Peruvian team that played with ten men for half the game. A dubious penalty call in the first half put Uruguay up 1-0, and Suarez secured his brace in the 67th minute with a lovely ball in the top right corner. The scoreline flattered Uruguay, who were, to be kind, incredibly poor; Peru managed to claw a goal back in the 84th minute but it wasn't enough to get them back into the match.

With the result, Uruguay tighten their grip on fifth place in CONMEBOL's qualification tournament for the World Cup and become favourites to face Asia's fifth place side in a qualification play-off. They move five points clear of seventh place Peru and three points clear of sixth place Venezuela, but their three remaining matches in qualifying are against Colombia, Ecuador, and Argentina, all teams ahead of them in the standings.

Uruguay face the already qualified Colombian team at home in Montevideo on Tuesday, while Venezuela and Peru face off against each other.
