In four days, Jamie Carragher's career as a Liverpool player will have come to an end when the final whistle blows on Sunday's season finale against QPR at Anfield. With only that one, last game left before he retires, Carragher today sat down for his final press conference as a professional football player.
From his plans for the future to where Liverpool has fallen short over the years, the defender seemed in good spirits as he looked forward to at least a few seasons alongside Gary Neville as a pundit for Sky Sports while once again insisting that his good form of late has only reinforced the decision to hang up his boots.
"The more I've been in the team," he said, "the more I've wanted to stick with my decision and go out playing. I've been quite fortunate really that at the time that I announced it, I kept myself in the side. I can go out playing, which is something I'd prefer rather than maybe stay another year and be in the stand, on the bench or wherever it may be."
When it comes to looking back rather than forward, Istanbul remains unmatched as the high point of his career. And though he regrets never having been able to lift the league trophy, he can now look back at a career has seen him win every other trophy possible, from the Community Shield and UEFA Super Cup to all four of the European and domestic cups Liverpool has competed for.
And in the end—and in typical Carragher fashion—the boy from Bootle insisted that whatever happens on Sunday, he won't end the day in tears.
