Sahin: "Thank God I Have Left Brendan Rodgers"

Not much has gone right for Nuri Sahin since he left Borussia Dortmund in 2011, but even his time spent in exile on Real Madrid's bench after being named the Bundesliga's player of the year the season before wasn't as poor an experience as the six months spent floating on the fringes of the first team at Liverpool.

"I did not fail at Liverpool," a still incensed Sahin insisted in an interview with Spanish outlet AS as they checked up on the player. "Brendan Rodgers wanted me to play as a number 10 but I do not play behind the strikers. I talked to him and asked him why he was playing me there. It is not my real position. The coach could not answer me."

Rodgers, while never having been painted as the sort of manager to put his arm around the shoulder of players, has at least always seemed one more than willing to discuss his methods and the meaning behind them. At times it's an approach that has even got him into trouble, as when results aren't forthcoming he can be seen as a man better at talk than action.

Shain, though, clearly wouldn't agree, and after spending six months at Anfield and with the only thing he took away from his experience a broken nose, he's clearly unhappy that the manager never gave him the answers he was looking for.

"Still, no regrets," he added. "To play at Anfield was a wonderful experience. And maybe if I had not gone there I would not have been able to return to Borussia Dortmund. For that, I am happy. Thank God I have left Brendan Rodgers."

It all makes for a stark turnaround from when he first arrived in England, publicly stating the reason he'd chosen Liverpool over Arsenal was the presence of Rodgers, with the manager having sold him on his brand of football and his ability to get the most out of Sahin in England.

Still under contract at Real Madrid, Sahin nonetheless feels much better since returning to Germany and his old club. Though to hear him say it, it's hard to imagine a move just about anywhere in the footballing world wouldn't have represented a step up after the time he spent with Brendan Rodgers.
