He recorded a team-leading five tackles along with three interceptions and completed 90% of his team-leading 87 passes. He provided the solid foundation for attack that the club have so often missed over the past year.
In short, he put in the kind of performance many had begun to take for granted before he fell to injury towards the end of 2011. It may even have been the best performance he's had since returning from it.
Liverpool's match may not have ended as many would have hoped as Zenit progressed past them in the Europa League thanks to the away goals rule, but when it came to Lucas Leiva's individual performance it was in fact a very, very good night.
And so, Lucas fans that we are—and in an attempt to be a little more positive for at least the next five minutes—it seems like a good time to take a quick look back at one of the very good things to come out of last night's game against Zenit at Anfield.
