Sunderland's 2-2 draw at Cardiff City was ultimately notable for Cardiff owner Vincent Tan--who sacked manager Malky Mackay yesterday after weeks of discord at the Welsh club--booing his club at full time, but things became worrisome at the half when reports emerged that Fabio Borini had been taken to the hospital after falling unconscious in the changing room. The 22 year old had a very good first half and was unfortunate not to score, but things got scary at the half as word trickled out that he'd been rushed to the hospital.
As the second half progressed there were reports that the Liverpool loanee regained consciousness, and Sunderland manager Gus Poyet provided a positive update after the match was over:
"Fabio was very sick. The doctor has since checked with the hospital and everything is fine. He will stay overnight and then return to Sunderland tomorrow. He showed great character wanting to play while feeling ill and he almost scored. It shows how much he cares for the club. We wish him all the best."
That's terrific news considering the initial concerns; with little information regarding fitness or health in the lead up to the match, it was hard to understand how or why Borini would have collapsed at the half. Whatever sort of illness it was apparently affected Adam Johnson as well, and hopefully both make a quick recovery and get back to full health as soon as possible.
