The talk of the town after Liverpool's 3-1 victory over Cardiff City was Luis Suarez continuing his epic goalscoring run with yet another brace and Jordan Henderson picking up where he left off with his imperious form against Tottenham. Behind them, though, was a defensive performance for the ages from one Mamadou Sakho.
With all three of his partners on the backline struggling for different stretches of the match, the bulk of the defensive burden fell on Sakho's considerable shoulders, and he carried it with aplomb. Time after time as Cardiff broke forward, Sakho was in the right place at the right time, breaking up play and stopping attacks cold. He even aided in Liverpool's attack on several occasions, including playing a key role in the buildup to the opening goal.
Seeing Sakho on such form is exactly what Liverpool fans were hoping for when the club signed the massive defender in the summer. Sakho is just 23 and still improving, and it's frightening to think of just how good he could become. We are perhaps, perhaps, witnessing the blossoming of the player who might be one of the best defenders on the planet within the next few years.
