Agger Admits Difficult Start But Insists Liverpool on Right Track

Star defender admits it's been a difficult start to the league season for Liverpool but insists the club is on the right track and trying to play the right way.

"It’s the kind of system I like to play so I’m more than happy," was Daniel Agger's response when the Liverpool Daily Post asked him how he had found adjusting to life under Brendan Rodgers, adding, "I also think it’s the right way for Liverpool Football Club—it’s the style of football Liverpool should play."

Of course, all because Agger is happy about the new approach and that fans would likely agree it represents the way Liverpool should be playing doesn't mean everything has gone smoothly—either for the squad as a whole or for the Danish centre back. In fact, perhaps the most disappointing aspect of Liverpool's struggles so far this season has been the at times shaky and mistake-prone defence, an area of the team that last year was one of its bright spots.

"It has been difficult," Agger admitted, "but we knew that before we started. We knew that we were trying to adapt to a new system and a new way of playing, so it was going to take some time. I see signs every day in training and in the game that we are going the right way, but we need to be a little bit more clinical and make sure we get the result when we deserve it."

It also hasn't helped Liverpool's attempts to adjust to Brendan Rodgers' system that they have already had to face last season's three best sides with Arsenal, Manchester City, and Manchester United all having come to town in the opening weeks. Knowing the class of Liverpool's opponents may not have made it any easier to watch some of the early growing pains, and it certainly hasn't made it any easier to see some of the same problems that plagued the squad last season carrying over to the 2012-13 campaign alongside a newly uncertain backline, but simply knowing that what will likely be the toughest stretch of matches the club faces this season has already passed should inspire some hope.

"I really think we are moving forward now. We dominated the fixture last weekend but at the end of the day we need to start collecting some points. The most important thing is always the three points and we haven’t got any of them yet, but I do feel confident that we are getting there."

With just two points for their first five league games and talk of the club suffering their worst start since the Palaeolithic, Saturday's trip to Carrow Road to face Norwich offers Liverpool perhaps their best chance yet of taking all three points in the league under Rodgers—though Daniel Agger isn't expected to be available to face the Canaries. However, his positive response to treatment for the injury suffered against Manchester United could mean a return as early as the next weekend when Liverpool play host to Stoke City.
