Matchday: Poland v. England

Following Tuesday's postponement due to rain, England's World Cup qualification match against Poland kicks off today at 4PM BST/11AM EST.

After Tuesday's farce in Warsaw, with a torrential downpour making the pitch unusable while the stadium's retractable roof stayed open, the rescheduled World Cup qualification match between Poland and England in Group H is set to go today at 4PM BST/11AM EST. As long as it's not still raining while stadium officials still haven't figured out where they left the remote that opens and closes the roof.

Assuming there are no more problems in Poland, Steven Gerrard and Glen Johnson will both expect to start as they return from their respective suspensions, with Gerrard reclaiming the captain's band from Wayne Rooney. England currently sit top of the group on goal differential, level on seven points with upstarts Montenegro after the minnows defeated Ukraine on Tuesday evening, and a win today would put them clear on top while a Polish victory would pull the Euro 2012 co-hosts even.

In a perfect world one might hope that England, FIFA's fifth ranked side in world football, might try to put on a bit of a show against the fifty-fourth ranked Poles. With one less day for the players to recover before returning to duty with their clubs on Saturday, about all most Liverpool fans will really care about in the end, though, is seeing the club's representatives on the national team come home fit and ready for action.
