The striker crisis everybody knew was coming sooner or later for Liverpool arrived today when Fabio Borini broke his foot in training with the Italian national team.

Following word that Andre Wisdom had returned from the England U21 national team with a shoulder injury, things quickly got even worse for Liverpool on the injury front when the Italian FA informed the club that Fabio Borini had broken his foot in practice ahead of Friday's match against Armenia. If there are no complications, it will mean that the striker is likely to miss between six and eight weeks at a minimum.

Borini has so far struggled to settle on the wing at Liverpool despite that he played there regularly for Roma last season, and following a swollen ankle that forced him off at the half against Manchester United he has found playing time hard to come by. Still, even if he wasn't providing a great deal from the wing, at striker Borini represented the only senior cover Liverpool had for Luis Suarez following a disastrous close to the transfer window.

Now, Liverpool's depth chart at centre forward would appear to jump from Suarez to German U19 striker Samid Yesil and 18-year-old local hope Adam Morgan. Both players have impressed at the youth levels, and Yesil put in a promising performance against Young Boys in the Europa LeagueWest Brom in the League Cup, but neither has yet seen a minute of action in the Premier League.

This, then, would be the striker crisis most everybody knew was coming when the clock struck eleven in England on August 31st without anyone having been brought in to fill the void up front that had been created the day before when Andy Carroll was allowed to leave for West Ham on loan. The only question there ever really was was when it would come. And now we know the answer.
