Andre Wisdom has returned to Liverpool from the English U19 team today after a shoulder injury picked up against Stoke over the weekend failed to improve as quickly as expected. News of his injury will come as a surprise to many, as Wisdom completed the full ninety minutes on Sunday, ended the match without appearing in distress, and the club didn't subsequently report on the injury before he headed off to join his international teammates.
Still, according to England manager Stuart Pearce, "Andre went over on his shoulder playing for his club and it was something that just didn’t ease up at all. We got him on the training pitch on Wednesday but we just felt that it wasn’t [improving], so he’s gone back to Liverpool."
Jordan Henderson, Raheem Sterling, and Jack Robinson all remain with the U21 national team and all are expected to play a role in Friday's match against Serbia, the first of a home-and-home double header that will determine which of the two countries makes it to next summer's U21 European Championships.
"We’ve pulled a team out of the hat who are unbeaten in qualifying," said Pearce of England's opponents. "It’s going to be a tough game and I’m sure it won’t be won or lost on Friday evening; it’ll go over the two legs and will be very tight. We expect the odd goal will separate the two of us.
"They are a good side and we are under no illusions about that. But we’re a good team, too, with some very good players, so I think it will be a great advert for Under-21 football."
