Lyon travel to Anfield currently on top of Group E for Matchday Three in the Champions League.
After a poor showing on the weekend against Sunderland, Liverpool are in need of a quick rebound. League standing aside, Liverpool have struggled to produce much in the way of attack in the past month. As mentioned, Lyon sit atop Group E as well as Ligue One. Lisandro Lopez and Bafetimbi Gomes, the clubs two major imports during the transfer window, lead the team up front. Lyon have not conceded yet in the group stages, beating Fiorentina 1-0 and drubbing Debrecen 4-0.
Rafa found himself in the position to defend Liverpool's quality in the build-up to today's match, and he views today as the perfect jumping-off point. Liverpool are boosted by the return of Steven Gerrard, but will still feel the absence of Fernando Torres up front. The Reds will certainly need more creativity tonight than they showed at the Stadium of Light, where they looked out of sorts and didn't test Craig Gordon until it was too late.
European nights at Anfield are the stuff of legend (and DVD), and tonight would be a great springboard into a massive week for the club. Carra's called on the fans to help as much as possible, and I'll certainly be doing my part from thousands of miles away.
Not a complete surprise, but still unexpected that David N'Gog starts by himself up front. Martin Kelly also makes his Anfield debut, and what a big debut it is. Good to see Agger in the starting eleven again, an indicator that his fitness worries are behind him. Mascherano and Lucas pair again in central midfield, and the trio of Kuyt, Benayoun and Gerrard will provide the link up to N'Gog.
