Yesterday saw a flutter of activity regarding the Henrikh Mkhitaryan transfer, mostly down to a thinly-veiled series of tweets that appeared to confirm the move from Artur Petrosyan, a journalist in Russia and Eastern Europe who's got something of an inside track regarding the player and any supposed deals. Late last night into this morning there was contradictory information from The Independent, who asserted that Liverpool were out of the running and Dortmund had secured the player's services, raining on the brief parade Petrosyan had coyly started.
Today we're back to the good times, with information from Petrosyan and Russia Today reporter Alexey Yaroshevsky dismissing the Dortmund deal and claiming that Liverpool will soon be announcing the capture of the talented Armenian attacking midfielder. Yaroshevsky's sort of coming out of nowhere on this, but he's apparently got an inside source at Shakhtar and has correctly reported deals for Fernandinho and Willian over the past few weeks.
First, from Yaroshevsky's timeline, which is chock-full of confirmatory tweets and responses to interested parties (and is worth a minute or two of your time):
Yes, Henrikh Mkhitaryan WILL be #LFC player within the next 72 hours, pending medical and official confirmation. Shakhtar source confirmed— Alexey Yaroshevsky (@YaroLFC) June 29, 2013
To reiterate, this is THE same source who told me of Fernandinho and Willian transfers days before it happened. And he's 100% sure this time— Alexey Yaroshevsky (@YaroLFC) June 29, 2013
@LFCTransferNRS Shakhtar expected to announce his departure either today or tomorrow, maximum on monday— Alexey Yaroshevsky (@YaroLFC) June 29, 2013
@ElmoRed2011 possibly, but he will be announced officially very soon. There may be slight paperwork delays, but the deal has been agreed— Alexey Yaroshevsky (@YaroLFC) June 29, 2013
Not to be outdone, Petrosyan chimed in, dismissing The Independent's story and attributing it to a falsified report from Bild:
Modern journalism: Bild makes up a story, Independent steals it, Bild quotes it.— Artur Petrosyan (@arturpetrosyan) June 29, 2013
So, now that we're all caught up, we can say that Liverpool are either very, very close to signing one of their most sought-after transfer targets of the early summer for a significant fee, or we're all being trolled on an impressively massive scale. I'd guess we're all hoping for the former, but fair play if it's the latter and we're unknowing participants in Jen Chang's twisted tale of revenge and excrement-filled mailboxes.
Best to meet the mail carrier at the curb for the next few days just to be safe.
