Even though Simon Mignolet ran away with Man of the Match voting in February, when it came time to name the player of the month, it was the big goals Liverpool Offside readers remembered as they named Philippe Coutinho the club’s best for the third month this season. It makes the diminutive Brazilian the clear frontrunner for Player of the Season at this stage, and now he could get even further ahead.
He isn’t the frontrunner, though. Once again, that honour falls to Simon Mignolet, who in a month with only five games managed to lead the way with 14 points. Barring an exceptional—or exceptionally poor—outing, goalkeepers usually end up somewhere in the middle of the pack in Man of the Match voting, a separating line between players the fans think did well and those they think did poorly. By that standard, Mignolet being named Man of the Match twice last month says he had some exceptional performances.
Second place in voting last month, which gives a player five points for being named Man of the Match through to one point for coming in fifth, got there another way: Martin Skrtel wasn’t ever Man of the Match, but he was named one of Liverpool’s best players in every game and racked up 12 points in the process. Just behind him, Coutinho is once again in the running with one Man of the Match title and 11 points overall.
Rounding out the slate are Jordan Henderson (nine points), Mamadou Sakho (seven points), and Joe Allen (six points). It’s up to you, though, to decide which order they should fall in for Player of the Month voting for March. Mignolet was first in voting match-to-match for the second time in a row—will it be enough to get him Player of the Month honours this time around? Or will that honour go to the consistent Skrtel? Or can Coutinho steal another vote and take his fourth monthly title?
