Barcelona Bid for Suarez "Imminent" After Apology Issued

So long, farewell, auf wiedersehen, good night. - Laurence Griffiths

Timing is everything, and hot on the heels of Luis Suarez's Twitter apology to Giorgio Chiellini, Barcelona are set to make an opening bid for the Uruguayan's services.

Well, that escalated quickly.

Ten short days ago, Barcelona was rumoured to be interested in Luis Suarez for a mere €65M, or €30M plus Alexis Sanchez. A general round of "Um, no" followed, and it was thought by most that Liverpool's owners would be quick to reject any sale as they had done the previous summer should the Catalan club actually come calling. Suarez's third biting incident quickly changed the entire complexion of the story, and now the Liverpool Echo are reporting that the club are expecting an "imminent" bid from Barcelona.

Although he hasn't submitted a formal transfer request yet, Suarez's apology is apparently a green light to the Spanish giants that they can make their move. The Spanish tabloids have reported for several days that a Barcelona bid was contingent upon the striker issuing an apology, so it's no surprise that things are suddenly moving this quickly.

What remains, of course, is the issue of price. The Echo maintains that £70- £80m release clause in Suarez's contract that doesn't sound contingent upon Champions League qualification, but also that Liverpool will stand their ground and force Barcelona to pay the full amount should they want Suarez. Where Alexis Sanchez fits into this transfer remains to be seen; although rumours of the Chilean's interest in Arsenal have been circulating, they're not exactly concrete disinterest in a move to Merseyside.

With the European transfer window officially open, it's feasible all parties could agree to a speedy resolution to this saga. Suarez is currently holed up in a walled compound in Uruguay, and it's looking more and more likely that he might never set foot in England as a Liverpool player again.
