There seems to be much carping and moaning in various threads about the relative merits or demerits of specific players in Liverpool's squad. Setting a baseline for argument is difficult because starting elevens are hard to pick and, with severe emotional attachment, threads can fly off track in about two seconds. I thought maybe some of these arguments could be deflected into a separate thread. So, who is in your starting eleven and what formation would you prefer if the whole squad was fit? Also, the reasoning behind your picks would be nice.
Mine is 4-2-3-1.
Johnson, Skrtel, Sakho, Enrique
Sterling, Henderson, Suarez/Sturridge
Suarez and Sturridge split time tracking back and playing target man.
If we get Konoplyanka he goes wide left. Henderson is dropped and the Suarez/Sturridge track back moves to the middle of the field.
My rationale: With explosive scoring upfront in a fluid front four the only piece that needs to be added is an exceptional attacking distributor, which we already have in Gerrard even when he is placed in a deep role. I choose Henderson over Coutinho for his superior work-rate even though I rate him at a slight disadvantage when on the ball. After the attack is established, the best treble defensive unit is Lucas, Skrtel, and Sakho. Lucas for his interception and tackling presence, as well as his ability to shield Skrtel from getting run on with his lack of pace. Skrtel for aerial duels as well as physical play. Sakho looks to me to be a solid all-around player. For width, Johnson and Enrique add a bit to the attack as well as providing a veteran presence in defense. I would say for consistency but they haven't seemed to offer much of that. Anyway, there aren't too many good options for replacement.
