First of all, was I the only one who took a modicum of solace in the fact that Chelsea swooped in last minute to steal Willian? While I'd obviously have preferred he be playing on Merseyside, it was a nice piece of poetic justice none-the-less.
Now, on to the matter at hand, who we can realistically hope to get before September 2.
Let's start with center-back; a position that became an even more glaring weakness with Kolo's injury. I personally will be very disappointed if Mamadou Sakho isn't wearing red by this time Monday. He appears keen for a move away from Parc des Princes, he's a beast in the air and he fits FSG's "24 and under" transfer ethos. An Agger - Sakho/Toure pairing would do quite nicely to solidify the backline.
Now, as far as attack goes, I'm of the opinion that we should be looking for a winger and not another midfield player. Coutinho has been great playing out wide on the left, but I think we can all agree he's most valuable in a CAM/CF role creating for the attackers. That leaves us with a need for a LW to pair with Sturridge and Sterling. Arda Turan perfectly fits the bill. I believe that Rodgers, Ayre and FSG (despite what we might think from time to time) are very much aware that Liverpool could use a "marquee" signing. Getting Turan would be an absolute coup and he would fit Rodgers' system seemlessly. Unfortunately, there's a familiar club lurking who are flush with Bale money ready to sign a player to fill what was to be Willian's role at White Hart Lane. I know that adherence to wage structures and transfer budgets are integral to the long-term health of the club, but I'd like to think that Liverpool are as fed up with Tottenham swooping in for our targets as we are. Signing Turan would be a great signal to the rest of the league that we are a legitimate Top-4 club.
Let me know who else you'd like to see brought in before the deadline or if I'm completely off base with my expectations here.
