One of the things that has always puzzled me about the EPL and other club leagues in General is the sense of violent hatred among opposing fans. I started following regularly a few years ago and have always been struck by the lines of police separating and surrounding visiting fans. Most of the books I've read have always treated this phenomenon as the norm without really ever explaining why.
I only bring it up today because I just watched my beloved Horns beat the **** out of our bitter hated rivals. The game is played at a neutral site halfway between the two schools and the stadium is evenly divided between the two fan bases, 40,000+ for each school. The game is as old as any soccer rivalry and beer is sold in the stadium. I've been a few times and while there is plenty of taunting and coarse language I've never directly seen violence between the two fan bases. It happens but in over a hundred years of rivalry nothing has ever warranted the kind of official presence you see at non rivalry EPL games.
Just curious as to what the board experience has been. Thanks
